California POST Psychological Evaluations
Pre-employment psychological evaluations for law enforcement candidates are often treated as a purely administrative step, but they draw on the same core forensic skill set as any other suitability or risk-focused evaluation: a structured, records-based, hypothesis-driven approach to a specific, legally defined question. As a POST-certified evaluator, I bring that same forensic rigor to determining suitability for a peace officer role.
What This Evaluation Addresses
A POST evaluation assesses a candidate's psychological suitability for employment as a peace officer, consistent with the standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). While the setting is administrative rather than criminal or civil litigation, the underlying evaluation methodology draws directly on forensic psychology — structured assessment of a specific, defined question, grounded in testing, interview, and records review rather than a general clinical impression.
Who I Work With
I conduct POST evaluations for hiring agencies. I also accept referrals directly from candidates seeking a second opinion evaluation, which is an option available when a candidate wishes to have an independent evaluation conducted.
Timeliness, Without Sacrificing Thoroughness
POST evaluations are often time-sensitive — agencies frequently want a suitability determination in time to place a candidate in an upcoming academy class, and I typically turn these evaluations around within the same week of referral. That said, speed is never a substitute for thoroughness. Each evaluation still involves the same diligence I bring to any forensic evaluation — a genuinely thorough review, careful interview, and appropriate testing — so that a fast turnaround doesn't come at the cost of a well-supported opinion.
The Evaluation Process
Each evaluation includes a review of relevant background materials, a clinical interview, and psychological testing consistent with POST requirements. Evaluations are typically completed within the same week of referral, given the time-sensitive nature of academy placement.
What You Receive
A thorough, well-organized written report addressing suitability consistent with POST standards
Availability for consultation to clarify the referral question or candidate background
Prompt turnaround built around academy timelines
